My name is Salma Khwaja and it is a great privilege to be a teacher at Progressive High School. I have done my MD from Dow University of Medical Sciences, Pakistan. In US I have earned my Masters degree in Secondary Education from National -Louis University, Illinois. This is my seventh year of teaching in Fort Bend ISD.
I am a Science Composite Certified teacher and teach Biology & Environmental Systems. I practice Inquiry based , student-centered learning that inspires the growth of the questioning spirit in my students. I am also a great advocate of differentiated Instruction in order to cater to the needs of wide variety of students. I enjoy working with our students and help them to build their confidence and to connect science to their everyday life. My goal is to transform my classroom into a community of learners with higher order thinking, problem solving, and cooperative learning. My Teaching Philosophy: The major purpose of a good teaching philosophy is to give meaning and directions to the teacher’s action. It should serve both as a source and an influence for educational objectives and curriculum development. Teachers should demonstrate passion, energy enthusiasm and vitality in teaching environments. For a good classroom management, self- discipline the students by actively engaging them in learning and recognition of their worth. School diversity should be viewed as an asset rather than a hindrance. The diversity among students is not only in the cultural and socio-economic domain but also in intellectual and cognitive development. Students come to school with different strengths and areas for growth and improvement. It is the teacher’s responsibility to understand and judge their capabilities for enhancement on individual basis. Education must, therefore, focus on the development of potentialities not on setting of limitations. The educational opportunities should not be bestowed only on the meritorious students while the less privileged ones are ignored. The low achievers should be assessed, evaluated and placements should be made according to their special needs. Teacher should understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and should create instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners. Teachers should also understand the role of community in education, and develop a collaborative relationship with colleagues, parents, and the community to support students’ learning and well being. There should be such a relationship with parents that the students’ learning would be enhanced and help the parents to discover more about their own children. The teacher is a life-long learner. She/he should seek out resources to support professional growth and development through trainings, observations, professional dialogues, texts, seminars and conferences. |
